Founded in 2010, Ensibuko Arts Foundation (EAF) is a cultural organization operating at the intersection of art, community, and social transformation. Dedicated to the preservation, advancement, and innovation of dance heritage, EAF fosters the creation, research, and development of artistic works that respond to contemporary social realities while honoring indigenous knowledge systems and cultural traditions.
The foundation takes its name from the indigenous word “Ensibuko,” meaning “The Origin,” reflecting our commitment to cultural roots, identity, and creative expression.
Based in Jinja, Uganda, EAF promotes access to dance and the arts through a social and entrepreneurial approach to the creation, production, and distribution of artistic work. We extend opportunities for artistic engagement to underserved and marginalized communities, creating safe and inclusive spaces for learning, collaboration, and creative growth, free from discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, or social background.
While deeply grounded in local culture, EAF seeks to broaden the horizons of emerging artists by facilitating international exchange, cross-cultural dialogue, and exposure to global artistic practices. Over the years, we have successfully implemented a wide range of programs, including weekly dance and arts workshops, open practice sessions, artist mentorship initiatives, international residencies, creative productions, and community outreach activities. These efforts culminate in our annual community arts festival, which celebrates creativity, diversity, and cultural exchange.
The heart of our work remains in Jinja, where our journey began as a small group of young people dancing on the outskirts of the city. What started as a grassroots initiative has evolved into a vibrant and structured arts movement that provides diverse creative opportunities for young people and communities across Uganda.
Having grown up in the streets and communities of Jinja, we remain committed to contributing to the city’s growth and transformation. Through trust-building, collaboration, and meaningful engagement, we have cultivated spaces where young people can express themselves freely, develop their talents, and connect with others through the transformative power of dance and the arts.
Our Mission
At Ensibuko Arts Foundation, our mission is to empower individuals and communities through dance and the arts by fostering creativity, cultural exchange, entrepreneurship, education, and social inclusion.
We strive to:
- Connect local and international artists through residencies, collaborations, and performance platforms that promote cross-cultural learning and artistic exchange.
- Mentor and support emerging creatives, fostering both their personal and professional development.
- Inspire positive ideological and social transformation among young people by encouraging self-expression, creativity, critical thinking, and personal growth.
- Promote cultural diversity and contribute to the growth and recognition of the dance and arts sector in Uganda and beyond.
- Strengthen creative entrepreneurship by equipping artists with the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to build sustainable careers in the cultural and creative industries.
- Use dance and the arts as tools for empowerment, rehabilitation, healing, and community development.
- Increase access to arts participation in underserved communities by creating safe spaces where young people can learn, create, perform, and connect.
- Build a sustainable and inclusive artistic ecosystem that encourages dialogue and collaboration between contemporary, urban, and traditional art forms.
